Make your Mac use British English spelling

This has been bugging me forever, and I always assumed it wasn’t possible to change; well I was wrong.

  1. Open System Preferences, International
  2. Click Edit list…
  3. Scroll down and you’ll find a checkbox for British English. Check it.
  4. Logout and back in again, and relaunch any apps that use spell checking
What I can’t understand is why this isn’t something OS X handles by default. It knows you’re in the UK from selecting other regional options (currency and time handling, for instance), so why would it assume we want to use American English?
